About
Tom with Dad in April, about a week before entering Eastway
Tom 6 months later in Eastway on 9th November 2012
Tom entered hospital in April to undergo treatment to come off a lot of the heavy medication he was on, but because he didn't understand what was happening to him, he was asking to come home. He was therefore detained under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act, which can keep patients against their will for 28 days.

When he came home it was clear that he was still seriously unwell, and needed to be readmitted. Because a Section 2 cannot be repeated, he entered under a Section 3, which can detain people for up to 6 months. During this 6 months we became seriously concerned about Tom's care, and eventually registered a formal complaint. This triggered a safeguarding investigation which was shared with the family yesterday.

The safeguarding report concluded that the hospital's treatment of Tom constituted psychological abuse. However, to make matters worse, the report we received yesterday was dated October - it is now well into November.

The report from the formal complaint is due out next week, and the tribunal challenging Tom's section is due in December. We hope to simply raise awareness about this and share Tom's story with others. Tom has been mistreated by the very services that are meant to protect and help him. Instead, his condition has worsened. We would like to thank everybody who has shown kindness and support regarding what has happened so far and would encourage people to share this story where you can.
